Colors and my comfort zone
A few days ago I created a new wave landscape patchwork piece. and went out of my color comfort zone and used lots of bright oranges. A color I don't normally use a lot of but I liked how it turned out. "Orange is a color that provokes an immediate reaction. What is it about the color orange that makes it so effective? In some cultures, it’s considered a sacred hue, while in others it’s a symbol of royalty. Bold and dynamic, orange is used to signal danger while at the same t

Pockets Today
Today is pocket day. I always add side zippered pockets to my pants and it took a while because I couldn't find the right colors for the pockets. I took out my plum and purple boxes of fabrics and of course the pieces had been waiting there all this time. Exactly the same shade as the pants! I cut out 4 pieces, 2 for each pocket measuring 22 x 26 cm each. The inner seam leg is unpicked to enable access to the outside side seam of the pants leg. I measured down 30 cm from my w

My favorite tshirt tunic
No matter how many times I say that I won't buy any more t shirts I always end up with a few more than I need in my closet. They are hard to turn down when they cost 1 shekel at the charity store and I tell myself that I can always let the children use them in the sewing class as recreating fabric. Well what I did 2 weeks ago before the sewing session that I had last week with the children, was sort through my closet for t shirts for them to create scarves. At the same time

Creating Art with Remnants Part 4
This post is going to be about creating or rather recreating with very small pieces of fabric. I use the smallest pieces to create fabric beads and slightly larger pieces are used in my art quilts. For the mosaic patchwork pieces I use small squares, triangles and all the odd shaped pieces that are left in my scrap bag. This technique can also be used to create a background for a theme quilt. A mountain, a skyline or an ocean. It can also be used in fashion as fabric for a co

An Upcycling morning
I had a fun morning today. On friday mornings I run an adult sewing class and this morning decided to take them to the local charity store to show them first hand what is available locally for fabric upcycling. For a change I managed to get up early. The charity bargain (yes there is such a thing) market is held on Fridays and is open from 6 am till 11 am. I arrived at 6:30 am. There were already 15 people there and due to present restirctions they could not allow more people

Purple Ice
"Purple refers to any of a variety of colors with hue between red and blue.[1][2] Purple is closely associated with violet. In optics, purple and violet refer to colors that look similar, but purples are mixtures of red light and blue or violet light,[3][4] whereas violets are spectral colors (of single wavelengths of light). In common usage, both refer to colors that are between red and blue in hue, with purples closer to red and violets closer to blue.[5][6] Similarly, in t

Creating Art with Remnants Part 3
There are a few main sources to collect the raw materials for this project. If you sew, you will already have definitely realized that you have lots of small scraps of fabric. In this case the journey will be easier for you. Clothing from your closet or close family that you were thinking of getting rid of is a wonderful source of fabric. Another source is charity stores, op shops and the recycle industry. If you have access to the textile industry, they will be very pleased

Desert Evening
Ever since having lived near Eilat I have wanted to create a red desert evening scene. When I went to the scrap pile to create this piece I had something very particular in mind. I chose all the reds, russets, burgundys, plums, tans and browns that I could find. Some were patterned, some tie dyed and most were solids. Next step was to go to my drawer of fabric threads and choose the shades. it all came together once I began to create textures. Then chose the top stitching co

T shirt Tunic
I love Carol Kinney's tie dyes, and as I have said before the only down side is that because we live so far apart I don't have the chance to try any of the shirts on before they get here. My solution is to get the largest size possible which allows me many recreating techniques. I look at the colors before recreating. My wardrobe is color coordinated so I decide which pieces of clothing I will wear this with. This will be part of my camo, khaki/olive set. I have enough short

Mosaic Table Mat
This piece started out as an experiment. I had a very small amount of remnants in colors that I like from other projects and decided to make a visual piece from them. I had originally thought of making a small zippered pouch but the pieces were vey small so I decided to make an art piece. It started out with darker green pieces on it. It looked ok but wasn't exactly what I had envisioned. I added lighter turquoise and pale blue to get the desired effect.

Creating Art with Remnants Part 2
Wave Landscape Patchwork Technique When sorting my fabrics I sort according to color first and then size the piles according to longer wider strips, rectangles, squares, odd shaped pieces, circles and last of all the very narrow strips. Strips can be slightly wider, slightly shorter, solids and patterned. I upcycle fabrics from sheets, childrens clothing and men's button down shirts. There are many solid colored fabrics and the patterns that I end up with are many florals, st

Creating Art with Remnants Part 1
I am going to share some of my thought process when I create fabric art. I am inundated with fabric and ideas. One of the "problems" that I have in my creative process is that I am adept at many different techniques and "see" the end products. It is not possible to create all that I see.. Why do I say :problem" you are most probably asking. It makes it difficult to focus and one needs focus in order to complete projects and to specialize and develop in one's art. It has taken
