Interchangeable Landscape Tutorial 5

Preparing the appliqued pieces. Why are they called appliqued? Whether they are raw edged or turned under the pieces are laid one over the other – appliqued over the next piece.

Now all the fabric pieces must be ironed. If you are doing a raw edge landscape, the edges can be left as is. If your edges are to be turned under then they must be prepared.

To prepare a turned over and under appliqued piece we need to lay it on the paper pattern piece and iron over the edge of the paper. I attach the fabric to the paper with a pin and leave it in until it is to be used. The paper helps to keep the shape of the edge.

snip the seam allowance slightly to enable it to be turned over the edge of the paper.

Some glue it down. I prefer to dampen it slightly

I then gently iron the snipped pieces down.

I am going to do a raw edge appliqued landscape. I have laid the colors out in the order I want them and have chosen my thread colors.

Next lesson I am going to construct it.
