Tutorial #3 Rag Poncho
Materials for the Rag Poncho
72 fabric squares in a variety of colors in flannel, corduroy and woollen fabrics. Each square is 6 inches. Another 72 squares in a solid colored fabric. I chose jewel tones for the front of the poncho and used a burgundy colored sheet for the backing squares. If you want a larger poncho I would suggest making larger squares.
This poncho is made from 72 squares. 36 in front and 36 in the back . I decided to create it from 8 sections of 9 squares each. I need 8 squares of each of the 9 colors.

72 lining squares in a solid color and I found matching thread in my stash.

Place a square of the lining behind each colored square.

Take 4 squares – 2 colored squares and 2 lining squares

and pin and sew them together like this - with the seam allowance facing the right side.

front

Back

Lay the squares out in the design that you want and sew one section so that you can see the pattern for reference

Sew the rows together making sure you include a lining square behind each colored square.

Then join the strips to form the 9 squared sections

There are 8 sections of 9 squares in each section here

Sew 4 sections together for each side of the poncho

Lay one side on top of the other like this stitch up 2 sides

and cut a neckline opening of 29 cm across – 29 cm in front and 29 cm in back

2 rows of stitching around all the edges. Cut the seams making sure you don't cut through the stitching lines

Rag the seams up by snipping them and rubbing the seams against each other. Shake up, clean with a vacuum cleaner, run through the dryer to get off the excess lint, do this a few times till it is free of fluff and then wash.
