What are Monochromatic Colors
Monochromatic colors are all the colors of a single hue, the tones, tints and shades. The color schemes are derived from one color using all the shades, tints and variations of that color. Adding white and black to the base color lightens or deepens it.
The challenge of the monochromatic fashion outfit is to create a cohesive and visually non monotonous look by wearing different shades and tints of the same color .
How To Create a Monochromatic Color Scheme
In order to create a cohesive look I begin with my main or dominant color then add deeper shades of the same color. Here and there I add some tints which are lighter versions of the base color, I also add tones which are flatter, less intense forms of my main color.
I then create visual interest by using different textures and materials. Nubbly fabric next to smooth and an addition of chunky jewelry and accessories in the same color family.
My chocolate brown outfit
Today is a chocolate brown day. Brown pants that I have had for more than 20 years.They were designer pants bought at a charity store. The vest is one I made from velvet and lace remnants, a light brown t shirt, of course a charity store find. My signature jewelry in chocolate brown buttons with satin ribbon closures on the necklace.
I am now 62 and was always shy of wearing browns. I taught color coordination and accessory organization for many years and brown did not fit into my winter plan. At some point about 5 years ago I experimented with going out of my color box and lo and behold I was pleasantly surprised. Even since then I have been color experimenting and challenging myself.
Why Use a Monochromatic Color Scheme
It creates a harmonious look which is pleasant to the eye.
Once your wardrobe is organized it is simple to put together.
It creates a strong visual statement when using an intense color.
I am participating in a monochromatic challenge in a facebook group. That is how I normally dress, so the challenge for me is different - to put together 30 monochromatic outfits including fashion accessories using only what I have on hand. I am not allowed to purchase ANYTHING for this challenge.
I spent a few hour yesterday going through my closet, organizing and taking photos. This was a wonderful opportunity to sort clothing for wearing, upcycling and creating.
It is amazing how every time I go through my closet I find materials for creating. It is a never ending supply and I haven't bought clothes for years. I think that when one looks at what one has through different eyes new opportunities arise.
