Creating Again

Getting back to creating again after a break feels like rediscovering a part of myself I had set aside. Recently, I started working on another tutorial for making button and fabric necklaces using only the fabrics I could find around my studio.
Unpacking the studio has been a slow process, but it’s also been a treasure hunt. I uncovered containers filled with camo-colored fabrics and another with earthy brown tones. The challenge was finding enough chocolate brown buttons to match my vision.
Since I didn’t have enough chocolate brown buttons, I decided to make my own using the fabric scraps. This process is simple and adds a personal touch to the jewelry. Here’s how I made the fabric buttons:
Cut small circles from the fabric scraps, slightly larger than the button base.
Sew the fabric tightly around a button.
Secure the fabric neatly on the back to avoid fraying.
Optionally, add a layer of interfacing to give the button extra stiffness.
Making fabric buttons allowed me to match the buttons perfectly with the necklace fabric, something that’s hard to find in stores. This technique is a great skill for fabric artists who want to customize their button jewelry or upcycled fabric jewelry pieces.
This project has rekindled my passion for fabric jewelry and reminded me why I love working with scraps.
Finding Inspiration in Unpacking and Creating Again
Unpacking a creative space can feel overwhelming, but it also offers unexpected inspiration. As I sifted through boxes, I found fabric scraps that sparked ideas for new pieces.
I realized that many fabric artists, including myself, often overlook the potential of leftover scraps. These small pieces can be transformed into stunning upcycled fabric jewelry, adding unique character to each creation. For this necklace project, I focused on combining these fabrics with buttons made from the same materials, creating a cohesive look that’s both creative and sustainable.

Developing the Tutorial
I’m currently working on a detailed tutorial that will include both a PDF guide and a video walkthrough.
I want to make sure the tutorial is clear and accessible for fabric artists at all skill levels. Sharing this process will hopefully inspire others to explore fabric jewelry using materials they already have.
Exploring Color Options and Past Creations
Over the years, I have gifted many fabric jewelry pieces made from scraps in various colors. I plan to share photographs of these past creations to showcase the range of possibilities when working with leftover fabrics. From soft pastels to bold prints, the color options are endless.
Seeing these samples will help others understand how to mix and match fabrics and buttons to create unique pieces. It also highlights the value of upcycled fabric jewelry as a sustainable and creative craft.
Enjoying the Creative Process
For anyone interested in fabric jewelry or upcycled fabric jewelry, I encourage you to look at your fabric scraps differently. Instead of seeing them as leftovers, see them as the foundation for your next project. Making your own fabric buttons is a simple way to add a unique touch and expand your design options.
What’s Next
As I continue unpacking and creating, I’ll share updates on the tutorial progress and examples of finished necklaces. I hope this journey inspires fabric artists and fabric upcyclers to try making their own button jewelry from scrap fabrics. Stay tuned for the detailed PDF and video tutorial that will guide you through every step.
If you’re passionate about fabric jewelry or want to start exploring upcycled fabric jewelry, this project is a great place to begin. Using what you have on hand not only saves money but also makes your creations truly one of a kind.
