Creating art is an adventure—one that involves patience, creativity, and often a few missteps along the way. My current project, a tree of life art quilt, is a perfect example of this journey. Over the weeks, the design has taken shape, with each stitch revealing a piece of my imagination.
The centerpiece of my quilt is the symbolic tree of life, a motif that carries deep significance across many cultures. It represents interconnectedness, growth, and the continuous cycle of life. This theme resonates with me, especially as I work with fabric and thread, materials of creation. My tree of life art quilt draws inspiration from the traditional olive tree, a symbol of peace and resilience in Israeli culture.

The olive tree, known for its strength and longevity, thrives in the challenging landscapes of Israel. It embodies a sense of connection to the region's culture and history. I chose browns for the background. a blend of greys and earthy browns for the branches and a selection of olive greens for the leaves. This palette symbolizes the earthy tones of Israel's landscape.
The Creative Process
Working on a new tutorial always takes me down a rabbit hole. I begin with a certain idea and picture in my head and then have to explore techniques as I create to achieve the quilt that I have envisioned. The creative process feels almost meditative, especially as I try different fabric techniques. Each method comes with its own set of challenges and rewards.
The first thing that I do is to create a pencil sketch of my vision and then search for the fabrics in my stash.
I document my progress along the way with many videos which will be incorporated into a detailed tutorial. The quilt isn't just a final product; it represents insights, trials, and lessons learned throughout the journey - which I share in the tutorial.
As I sew, I find inspiration in the beautiful landscapes of Israel, where olive trees sway in the wind and sunlight paints golden hues on the fields. These views shape the color palette and textures I select, enhancing the vision I have for my quilt.

Techniques Explored
One of the most enjoyable parts for me when creating, is experimenting with a variety of different techniques.. Of course, only using fabrics that I have on hand. Which of itself is a huge challenge as when I envision the end picture of a new quilt that I am creating, I see certain colors in my mind's eye and then don't always find them in my fabric supply. I never purchase new fabrics so I am forced to be creative.
This tutorial will use Wave Landscape Patchwork techniques as well as a few different applique techniques. There will also be a pattern.
Video Tutorial - From Vision to Creation
I am happy to announce that I will be releasing a detailed video tutorial along with the completion of my tree of life art quilt. This tutorial aims to guide you through the various techniques I’ve used in my project,
The goal is to make the tutorial both educational and inspiring, encouraging others to explore their creative potential. I want to share my journey and empower you to start your own quilting adventure, no matter your skill level.
The tutorial will cover key areas such as how to choose fabrics, breakdown techniques step-by-step, and explain my design decisions as well as share some of my trials and errors. I'm excited to offer this resource to you and hope it becomes a helpful addition.
Artistic Insights and Final Thoughts
Working on my tree of life art quilt has shown me that the creative journey is just as valuable as the finished product. When creating a new tutorial, I start out with a plan in mind but because I am creating something new, many times I have to adjust the technique as I go along, in essence many drafts are created before I come up with a prototype taking my vision to creation and even then there is room for change.
Each trial, error, and moment of inspiration has been a lesson and enriched my creative vision. Through this process, I've recognized the importance of perseverance and continuous learning.
Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things. I have completed the first Tree of Life and already am envisioning a completely different color version - so I am off to choose fabrics!
I’m looking forward to seeing this tutorial. I think that you have much experience in creating and a lot to teach us.
