A Dark Moonscape

Creating art has always been a refuge for me, a space where I can express my feelings and ideas through colors and textures. The students had asked me to create a technique for an art quilt but they didn't want to have to iron at all. So I created my Strip Collage Patchwork. This method is wonderfully freeing, requiring no ironing or precision. Instead, it invites a playful approach to assembling fabric pieces into beautiful creations.

This time I was inspired by the calmness of the night sky. Think about navy blues, deep purples, and soft lilac hues that reflect the gentle glow of moonlight. This piece, I named “A Dark Moonscape,” allows for creativity without limits.

The Beauty of Improv

The most fun part of strip collage patchwork is its improvisational nature. The days of fussing over perfect measurements and constantly reaching for an iron are gone. So when I want to work with a freeing technique I can embrace a relaxed mindset, and enjoy the creative process.

Inspiration often strikes from unexpected sources—a fabric scrap I might stumble upon or a color combo that seems to dance together. This time my color inspiration came from a tie dyed remnant in navy blue grey and purple For my Dark Moonscape project, the palette chosen mirrors a clear night. The deep navy forms a rich backdrop, while shades of purple blend seamlessly, with lilac touches adding a soft glow. This combination not only reflects a night sky but also evokes a sense of calm and mystery.

One of my favorite ways to celebrate this creation is by transforming it into an art piece that I will gift to family, a friend or a student.

Letting go

Creating my Dark Moonscape has underscored the importance of relaxation and playfulness in the creative process. No stress, no ironing, just sewing in a very relaxed fashion.

There is a deep satisfaction in letting go of perfection - it took a while for me to allow myself to do that - . I encourage fellow art quilters and patchwork artists to try this technique and discover the magic of fabric collage.

As you experiment with your creations, I hope you find inspiration and joy along the way. Remember—there are no strict rules, only endless possibilities!

Embracing Artistic Freedom with a Dark Moonscape

In a society where precision often takes precedence, it is refreshing to explore a technique that celebrates fun and relaxation.

I urge you to gather your materials, play with colors and textures, and foster your artistic expression without restrictions. Whether it’s adding a unique patch to a garment or crafting a stunning piece for your wall, this technique beautifully captures the essence of art in its freest form.

So take the plunge! Let your imagination soar amid the soothing shades of the night and create your own piece of textile art.
