Travel Kit

Now that I have decided to do some slow stitching, I am beginning to enjoy the process. It’s more than just a pastime; it’s a way to relax, express creativity, and connect with fabric meditatively.

One of the best aspects of slow stitching is its portability. This makes it the perfect companion for my travels. Recently, I went on a long train journey, and I was happy to bring along my latest project: pastel-colored fabric yoyos and flowers. To make the most of this time, I created a travel kit that kept me organized and efficient.

Slow stitching is about savoring every moment and enjoying the process. It’s a meditative practice that allows me to focus on each stitch and the overall design.

Bringing my projects along when I travel transforms the often dull hours spent on a train into a creative escape.

On my recent train ride, I settled into my seat, unpacked my travel kit, and started working on my pastel fabric yoyos. The rhythmic motion of sewing combined with the gentle sway of the train created a relaxing atmosphere. As I lost myself in the process, I was pleased to see that I had completed 45 yoyos!

What’s wonderful about slow stitching is that you don’t need a lot of space or fancy tools. With just a few essentials, you can turn any travel experience into a productive and enjoyable one.

To make sure I could work efficiently while traveling, I assembled a travel kit that included everything I needed for my slow stitching project.

Here’s what went into my travel kit:

Fabric: Some precut pastel colored fabric circles.

Needles and Thread: I packed various needles suited for my chosen fabric types, along with threads in matching colors. Preparing in this way meant I could try out different stitching techniques without any delays.

A Sewing Magnet: So that my needles would't fly all over the place

Scissors: A small and sharp pair of fabric scissors is essential for cutting threads and trimming fabric pieces. I made sure to pick a compact pair that easily fits in my kit.

Portable Storage: My grey atlantic salt comes in plastic bottles, a perfect container to keep everything organized. This made accessing my materials easy without creating a mess.

Once I found my seat, I began the enjoyable process of making my yoyos. For anyone unfamiliar, a yoyo is a small, circular piece of fabric gathered at the edges to create a puffy, flower-like shape. They add texture and dimension to fabric collages or applique projects.

Here is how I create yoyos

During my train trip, I managed to sew 45 yoyos. I also had to explain to curious passengers what I was doing.

Some of these yoyos will be used as is, and others form the base for a more intricate and layered fabric flower.

Traveling doesn’t mean you have to pause your creative projects. With a well prepared travel kit, you can take your slow stitching on the go, making the most of your time while traveling.
