Wave Sunrise Quilt Pattern

Updated: 5 days ago

Creating beautiful quilts, and for me teaching the techniques is an enjoyable creative journey. Recently, I took on the task of designing a paper pattern for the Wave Sunrise Art Quilt. Many of my students, who know the Wave Landscape Patchwork technique, have requested a paper pattern. They want to replicate the same design while trying out various color combinations - hence the need for a pattern which can be repeated.

Understanding the Wave Landscape Patchwork Technique

Let's revisit the Wave Landscape Patchwork technique that lays the groundwork for this quilt. This method involves piecing fabric shapes to create a wave-like effect., each finished quilt has a Wave Landscape patchwork signature but no 2 quilts are exactly the same.

Designing the Paper Pattern for Wave Sunrise Quilt

Designing this paper pattern for a Wave Sunrise quilt was both interesting and challenging. It began with sketching the layout on paper as I always do when I begin a new project, coloring it in and this way envisioning my idea on paper before moving on to designing it in fabric.

I first determined the quilt's dimensions. I aimed for a size that would make it an eye-catching wall hanging, yet manageable for beginner quilters. The quilt for the tutorial will measure 60 x 55 cm.

Once I finalized the sketches, I turned them into pattern pieces, which I numbered and then cut out fabrics from them.

Sewing the Final Version

With the pattern pieces ready, I will soon begin sewing and quilting the final Wave Sunrise Quilt. This is the part I enjoy the most, seeing my idea become a quilt.

When selecting fabrics, I start by choosing a color palette aligned with the quilt's theme. For the Wave Sunrise Quilt, I'll use soft peach, gentle greens, and hints of pinks and oranges—reflecting a serene sunrise, they were also the colors that I found in my stash and had to be creative with, as I won't purchase more fabrics.

Tips for Quilt Assembly

  • Fabric Selection: Choosing the right fabric is essential. Cotton or poly cotton fabric is recommended as it is lightweight and does not stretch. I chose solids for my qult sample but you could opt for fabrics with subtle prints or designs. Nothing jarring, as the visual effect has to be of fabrics flowing smoothly into each other.

  • Sewing Techniques: This quilt calls for sewing gentle curves, so practice first on a sample piece if necessary. and familiarize yourself with sewing curves. Accurate and same size seams are vital to keep the quilt pieces aligned.

To further your quilting journey, keep these additional practices in mind:

  • Pressing Matters: Be diligent about pressing seams! This step ensures an overall professional finish. And I can't say it enough, press and press again.

  • Experiment with Colors: Embrace creativity by testing different color combinations. The Wave Sunrise Patchwork is adaptable to various palettes—from bold to soft pastels.
