The mood I wanted was clear from the start. I was aiming for something dark, quiet, and somber, with depth rather than brightness. Purple and orange quilting thread brought in just enough contrast to keep the quilted wave sunset interesting without breaking the heavier mood.

I envision the colors very clearly and this time had the small sample wave sunset piece for inspiration. I found most of the colors that I had used for the smaller quilt but this time wanted to add more dark blues and purples to it which I was finding in the fabric boxes, so I did not have to be as creative as I usually am when having to be flexible in my color choices.

A Wave sunrise quilt asks for movement. If the lines are too stiff, the scene can feel flat. If the colors are too random, the glow disappears. For this wave sunrise quilt, I wanted the whole piece to feel like morning light rolling across water or hills, with soft rose, pink, and orange fabrics doing most of the work before the applique sun took its place.

That is where I am right now, auditioning fabrics for a sunrise. I have been binding quilts for a showing to students before a local workshop, handling the finished edges, checking corners, and looking at each piece with that strange mix of relief and curiosity that comes at the end of a project
